John Kalule
There are no coincidences. The forces that coalesced to bring Mr. John Kalule and Engeye together provided Team Engeye with the ideal candidate to liaison between the Americans and Ugandans who are dedicated to bringing health care to rural villagers. John's integrity, intellect, work ethic, charisma, and love of country have been, and continue to be, essential to the success of Engeye.
Since the decision was made to build the first Ugandan Clinic,
John has single-handedly:
- Provided a beautiful 5-acre parcel of land at no cost to Engeye
- Provided delicious meals and housing for the group of six Americans who went down during the summer of ’06 to clear the land and begin construction
- Mobilized and oversaw a 50-man workforce from Ddegeya and other villages to facilitate construction of the clinic, volunteer housing, and latrines.
- Mobilized a crew of local women to prepare hot nutritious meals for the work crew
- Mobilized translators to assist at the opening of the clinic in March of 2007
- Negotiated fair pricing for acquisition and delivery of all construction materials as well as furnishings and supplies for all the structures
- With a background in accounting, has maintained all bookkeeping related to construction and maintenance costs
- Coordinates all airport pickups, volunteer housing, and meals when teams journey to Uganda
- Coordinates hiring and training of nurses and other local Engeye Clinic staff
- Hosted Susan Nabukenya to the United States for six months and served as her translator and personal caretaker and nurse
John continues to oversee day-to-day operations of the clinic as well as construction of a new laboratory.
In addition, John is the devoted single father of a pleasingly precocious four-year-old son, Jeffrey.
